TheChallenge

In 2019, there was still no national platform dedicated to celebrating Black talent in UK theatre. The industry lacked visible recognition, meaningful representation, and a space to honour Black excellence on its own terms. Despite the UK’s long history of Black performance, talent often went unseen, uncredited or uncelebrated at a national level.

TheSolution

I helped conceive and co-create the Black British Theatre Awards, leading the overall creative direction and brand identity. From tone of voice to visual language, I shaped the experience across communications and the live event design, ensuring every detail reflected the energy, elegance and cultural power of the awards.

TheOutcome

Running annually through to 2024, the BBTA has grown into a recognised cultural platform with national press coverage, major brand sponsorships and a TV broadcast deal. Its growing influence continues to celebrate and elevate Black excellence in British theatre.
